Psytel: a cooperative of experts on health information

A French non-profit organisation, Psytel is a cooperative of experts who have been working for 15 years in the field of injury prevention: with the European Commission Directorate General for Health and Consumers (SANCO) on the prevention of domestic accidents (PHP programme – Injury DataBase), and with the Directorate General Justice, Freedom and Security (JLS) on the prevention of violence against children and women (DAPHNE Programme).

Psytel has developed an expertise on health information systems and created a number of databases, software tools and data mining (extracting relevant information from large amounts of data) in these areas. The development tools provided by Psytel are the MySQL database (a relational database management system that runs as a server providing multi user access) and the Apache HTTP server (the first web server software), both of which are “open-source softwares” developped and maintained by an open community of developers.

Psytel has multidisciplinary skills (a team of experts composed of epidemiologists, statisticians, economists, developers and computer scientists) that enables it to address problems in their various aspects. Furthermore, Psytel works on IT developments in the field of public health.
